- [S927] Obituary.
ANDERSON TWP. - Thomas L. Brown grew up in Mount Vernon, Ky., in a family so poor he had no shoes to wear to school.
Through hard work and a determination that his wife and children wouldn't experience the same hardships, he became a successful salesman.
Mr. Brown died Friday at the Lodge in Loveland after suffering a stroke in September 2004. The Anderson Township resident was 79.
"My respect and admiration for Tom had no bounds," said his son-in-law, Steve West of Covington. "He was a truly self-made man, rising from a large family during the Great Depression ... to become a highly respected sales professional."
A native of Quail, Ky., Mr. Brown had little formal education. "They were very poor - it was in the hills of Kentucky," said his daughter, Jackie West of Covington. "He was self-educated. He took a lot of correspondence courses. He felt it was important to speak correctly and write correctly.
"He always was embarrassed by the fact that he didn't have the formal education that his colleagues had. But yet he was the top salesman most of the time. He was so good with people."
Mr. Brown moved to Cincinnati at 18 to find work.
He became a salesman for the Goodyear Tire Co., rising to management positions for divisions in Independence, Mo., and Indianapolis. He later worked for Maidenform Inc. and Life Uniform Co.
"He was kind to all strangers (and) cared deeply about helping others," his son-in-law said.
Mr. Brown was a Boy Scout troop leader and received a 50-year Mason pin a few years ago.
He retired to Tuson, Ariz., before moving to Anderson Township to be closer to his daughter in 1993.
His wife, Mildred Ubelhor Brown, died in 1991.
In addition to his daughter, survivors include a son, Gary Brown of St. Louis; a brother, Carl Brown of Indianapolis; a sister, Edna Silcox of Louisville; two grandchildren; and a step-grandchild.
A memorial service is 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, 1950 Nagel Road, Anderson Township. Burial will be private.
