- [S927] Obituary.
LAKE LEELANAU ? Francis Xavier Schaub, 82, of Lake Leelanau, passed away Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010, at Munson Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.
Francis was born Jan. 10, 1928, in Leland Township, the son of Louis and Theresa (Popp) Schaub. On Sept. 26, 1953, at St. Mary's Church of Lake Leelanau, he married his loving wife of 56 years, Jean Ann (Gauthier) Schaub, who survives.
Francis was born on the original Schaub Farm in Lake Leelanau. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Church in Lake Leelanau, where he and his twin brother were long-time altar servers. Francis then served his country during the Korean War in the Army Air Corps. After the war, he returned to his hometown, where he was involved in many different lines of work throughout his life, including cherry farming, mink ranching, carpentry and postal delivery.
He loved to learn new things and read many publications, especially about astronomy, science, genetics and history. From this thirst for knowledge he designed and built many items for the farmhouse, such as the wood furnace and solar-powered water heater, and taught himself wine making, beekeeping and making maple syrup.
He appreciated music and learned to play the violin when he was a child. He was a creative person, was very interested in nature, and had traveled with his wife throughout the United States.
He encouraged his children to expand their knowledge of the world by watching educational television programs, and often said, "Come and watch this program, you might learn something!" He loved watching baseball and football games. Francis was a man shaped by faith, family and the Golden Rule.
Francis is survived by his wife, Jean; his six children, Mary Ann (Art) Urban of Traverse City, Susan (Ray) Messick of Cumming, Ga., Mark Schaub of Norman, Okla., Dennis (Kim) Schaub of Lake Leelanau, John (Mary Lou) Schaub of Lake Leelanau, Laura (Gordon) Gottfried of Traverse City; two sisters, Theresa F. Schaub, Sister Ottilia Schaub; a brother, Louis Schaub; 10 grandchildren, Jim Urban and Julie Patubo, Katie Jo, Dean, Derek, Dylan and Dustin Schaub, Emily Schaub, Kyle and Sarah Gottfried; and two great-grandchildren, Jasen and Karina Patubo.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Sister Charlotte Schaub, and a grandson, Evan Messick.
