Elsie Marie Tinsley Cramblet
Lola and Charles Tinsley welcomed their newest baby daughter Elsie on September 21, 1929. This blessed event occurred in a house 5 miles south of Flemington, Missouri. Because Elsie was the youngest of seven children, she had to put up with the antics and tormenting of her older brothers Leonard and Larry. One story not so fondly remembered was when the boys shot the eyes out of her doll "Maggie." Maybe it was from these toughening experiences that she was able to stand her ground so effectively later in life.
Elsie started school at Fairview, Missouri. Elsie became then, and remained until the present time, a member of the Rondo Baptist Church. The family moved to Sheridan Lake and later to Hartman, Colorado. Elsie graduated in 1947 with her whopping class of eight from Hartman High School.
Meanwhile Beryl Cramblet returned home from the Army in August of 1946. A few months later this dashing young cowboy invited Elsie to the Halloween dance at Coulson School. This relationship progressed resulting in a cold ride to Raton, New Mexico. Elsie Tinsley and Beryl Cramblet shared this great adventure with their friends Mary Lou Adams and Darrell Seufer. The trip was complicated by not being able to run both the car lights and the heater at the same time. So they drove with the lights on till it got too cold, but I bet a little snuggling took place to keep warm. The trip culminated at high noon, November 17th, 1947 with a dual wedding of the Cramblets and the Seufers. The happy newlyweds bragged about dancing in the barroom on the glass floor that evening.
After the wedding Elsie and Beryl made their home with Ross and Effie Cramblet on the ranch north of Holly until Sis arrived 11-27-1950. Then they moved across the creek to their own home before Gary came along on 8-8-1952. Their family was completed by the additions of Dale 7-14-1956, and Cope 11-16-1961.
Then in 1961 Elsie and Beryl moved to the Ponderosa to run the Prowers County Grazing Association. Elsie not only worked hard at being a ranch wife and a hard working mother raising three sons and a daughter, but in addition she drove a rural school route.
In 1973 Beryl, Elsie and the kids moved "into town" here in Lamar. Besides raising kids, Elsie worked outside the home at Lamar Livestock Commission Company, Lusher Auctioneers, A-1 Rental, and her own housecleaning service. She and Beryl also had a business processing cattle for most of the feedlots in Colorado, Western Kansas, Texas Panhandle, and Western Oklahoma.
It was during these years all Elsie and Beryl's children left the nest.
Dolores married John Bell 7-4-1986 and resides in Laughlin, Nevada.
Gary married Melita Quattlebaum 5-27-1978 and resides with their son Matthew Wayne in New Home, Texas.
Dale lives in Longmont, Colorado. His children Jennifer Lynn, Justin Ray and Cooper Wayne reside in Frederich, Colorado.
Cope and Susan live in Lamar, Colorado.
Throughout their 44 years of marriage, Beryl and Elsie also shared a common love of their Western heritage. Not only would you find Elsie riding in a parade with her boots and jeans, but that was her usual attire for all but formal occasions.... this is the last of those formal occasions.
After the death of Beryl in 1992, she continued her involvement with activities such as the Vaqueros Saddle Club, the Hartman Alumni Association and the First Baptist Church.
Through the years she was a great support to Ross Cramblet, and then to Effie, who died shortly after the wonderful 100th birthday celebration, which Elsie played a major part in orchestrating.
One of Elsie's favorite things to do was attend her family reunions the last weekend in July and the first weekend of September. This continued up through her Tinsley reunion in September of 2003 and the Sparks reunion in July of 2004.
During her children and grandchildren's years in school, Elsie remained active with school functions, doing livestock chores and attending countless livestock shows and fairs. Elsie loved her time spent with family. The family history she assembled and passed on to them is another of the great legacies she left for her family.
Throughout these past many years in Lamar the Cramblet home on Lynn Street was the center point for gatherings of family and friends. Holidays would find the cul-de-sac full of cars and trucks, and the phone ringing off the hook with friends who always knew where to reunite with her family. Scrapbooks came out of the closets and memories were shared. The smells of her home cooking filled the air. Kids with ropes in the front yard, and in the last few years, coyote wagons along the sidewalk, marked this as Elsie's house.
Up to the time of her passing she was a very active lady. Over the years many of us tried to give her a ride when we passed Elsie on her walks around the park. Just this last week she was trying to change a flat tire with a Handyman jack, in order to give a friend a ride; and she would have done it too, if the Handyman had worked.
Elsie passed away after a short illness on December 26th, 2004 at Memorial Hospital, Colorado Springs, Colorado. Her family was home for the holidays as always, and shared her last days with her.
Elsie will be missed for so many reasons. As a mother, a grandmother, an aunt, a friend. Her world famous chocolate sheet cake, her cookies and her love for everyone. The articles she never failed to clip from newspapers and send to family and friends to keep them up to date on what was happening. Her grandkids never left without a sack of their favorite cookies or an angel food cake.
Elsie was preceded in death by her husband Beryl on 2-24-1992, her father Charles Cleveland Tinsley 11-22-1955,
her mother Lola Dell Brown Tinsley 6-4-1969, her brothers Louis Andrew Tinsley 11-21-1957, Leonard Tinsley 1-14-1972, Williard Lawrence (Larry) Tinsley 1-24-1998, Ralph Emmerson Tinsley 8-18-1999, and her sister Martha Tinsley McLaughlin 9-10-1976
Elsie is survived by her daughter Dolores Marie "Sis" (John) Bell of Laughlin, Nevada, and her sons Gary Lee (Melita) of New Home, Texas, Larry Dale of Longmont, Colorado, and Darrel Wayne "Cope" (Susan) of Lamar, Colorado.
Her grandchildren, Matthew Wayne Cramblet of New Home, Texas Jennifer Lynn Cramblet, Justin Ray Cramblet, and Cooper Wayne Cramblet of Frederich, Colorado; her sister, Mary Pursley of Independence, Missouri; sister-in-laws, Marie Batdorf, Lamar Colorado, Lero Frazier of Bolivar Missouri, and Wanda Tinsley of Bolivar Missouri; nephews and nieces to numerous to name, and a host of friends.
This quote from a card given by her niece Peggy and Loyal Bland sums up today and tomorrow very well:
"There will be an empty place
in the hearts of many
whose lives were touched
by your mother.
Your mother honored all of life
by the way she loved
those who shared it with her.
She will be warmly remembered,
Deeply missed."
