Marvin Fluke
CANTON - Marvin Edwin Fluke, 86, of Clinton, Mo., formerly of Canton, passed away Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo., lovingly surrounded by his family.
Marvin was born Sept. 23, 1923, in Canton, Ill., the youngest child of Edwin Harrison and Olive Elliott Fluke. He grew up in Fulton County, Ill., where he graduated from Fairview High School.
Marvin was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1944, during World War II, and served in the Philippines and in Japan in the Army of Occupation. He obtained the rank of staff sergeant.
He married Bettyrae Zumstein on April 21, 1945, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Ellisville, Ill. Their early married life was spent in Canton, Ill., where Marvin was employed by Peabody Coal Company. He was transferred to Clinton, Mo., in 1958, working at the mine in Montrose as a heavy equipment operator for a total of 41 years, retiring in 1988.
Marvin was a Jubilee 50-year member of the Clinton United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Samaritan Builders Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Men. He was a member of the United Mine Workers, Hardee's Coffee Group and helped with the Henry County Blood Mobile for more than 20 years. He was a volunteer greeter at the Henry County Museum in Clinton.
Marvin and Bettyrae were avid square dancers and served as presidents of the Missouri Federation of Square Dancers.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Lawrence, Russell and Raymond; two sisters, Mildred Stucky and Marjorie Wagner; and several nieces and nephews.
Marvin is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Bettyrae; his two daughters, Emily (and her husband, Lee Ward) of Independence, Mo., Elaine (and her husband, Charles Boten) of Lee's Summit, Mo.; two grandchildren, Blaine Edwin Ward (and his wife, Debbie) of Belton, Mo., and Betsy Bain of Independence, Mo.; and five great-grandchildren, Shelby and Jordan Bain, Emily, Jack Harrison and Brody Lee Edwin Ward, all of whom he dearly loved.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, at the Clinton United Methodist Church. Entombment will follow in Carpenter Cemetery in Chilhowee, Mo.
