Stanley Helbling was born on March 4, 1916 in St. Anthony, the son of Alfred and Katherine (Hopfauf) Helbling. Raised in the area, he attended Chimney Butte School #2. He lived on the family farm northwest of St. Anthony until he was 18 and then joined the Community Conservation Corps. After that he moved to Mandan and went to work for the Mandan Creamery. He married "Maxie" Morrell on June 6, 1938 at St. Anthony Church. He joined the Northern Pacific Railroad (later Burlington Northern) in August of 1941; working as wrecker foreman for most of his 36 years with the railroad (he retired in 1977). He was a charter member of the Mandan Railroad Museum.
Stanley was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus (1950), Fraternal Order of the Eagles (1950), and of St. Joseph Church, Mandan.
Stanley was a dedicated family man all his life. Practical in nature and generous in heart, he believed in tending to business and doing the right thing. Stanley was completely devoted to his wife, Maxie, and was so very happy just to have her by his side. It wasn't unusual for him to hold her hand and praise her profusely; even until the day he died. He had a lifelong love of fishing and being in the outdoors, and had a special fondness for the Western Meadowlark. In retirement, he enjoyed gardening, fishing, playing Pinochle, dancing, and traveling. Stanley was proud of and active in his yard and garden well into his golden years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, John and Peter Helbling and Joe and Emil Knoll; three sisters, Mary Bullinger, Maggie Kautzman and Genevieve Wetsch and an infant daughter.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the St. Joseph Capital Campaign.
