James was born to Chris and Felicia (Klein) Boehm on Aug. 18, 1926, in Mandan, where he was also raised and educated. He served his country in the U.S. Navy and returned to Mandan, then later married Shirley Grosz on May 11, 1947, at Underwood. He worked for the North Dakota Highway Department specializing in highway design. James was with the Highway Department for 42 years, retiring in 1989. Proud to have served his country, he was a member of Mandan American Legion for 50 years.
Some special memories of James include his warm sense of spirit and generosity with a good sense of humor. He always maintained a positive attitude, if you had a bad day you could call Jim, he would quietly listen. Then in his special way of responding, speaking from the heart you would experience an uplifting sense of emotion. He had an appreciation for the outdoors and nature, enjoyed hunting upland game, deer and fishing. After his retirement, he and Shirley would enjoy traveling and spent eight winters in Las Vegas, which allowed them to travel around southwestern United States. He was an avid fan of Nascar in particular No. 24 Jeff Gordon. His other interests were playing cards and watching a good basketball game.
Left with fond memories are his wife, Shirley, Mandan; two brothers, William (Virginia) and Eugene, both of Mandan; his sister-in-law, Alice Boehm, Mandan; many nieces and nephews, in particular his niece, Ginger Russell.
James was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Betty (Lloyd) Upham; and one sister-in-law, Marlys Boehm.
Buried: 03/03/09.
