George Leingang
George G. Leingang, 95, died June 5, 2003, at a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with a Knights of Columbus rosary being said at 7 p.m. and a St. Anthony verein at 7:30 p.m. Visitation also will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
George was born July 21, 1907, in St. Anthony. He was raised in the St. Anthony-Solen area. He married Rose Haider in October 1928. George was the son of Germans from Russia immigrants and North Dakota pioneers.
His major occupation was farming and ranching in the St. Anthony- Solen area. Other interests included serving on several school boards, including the Ambulance Butte and Hilltop School Districts. A lifelong interest in agriculture included service as a board member on the Solen Equity Elevator. He also served as a committeeman under the initial 1933 Agricultural Adjustment Act. Later this became the Production Market Act, and the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, from which he stopped active service after 41 years. During the 41 years he worked with the Agriculture Department, he served on the North Dakota Association of Elected Committeemen. Other positions included weed control officer of Morton County and board member for the Morton County Social Service Board, including one stint as its president. He also served on the State's Medical Care Advisory Board for the Department of Human Services. He was active in the North Dakota Conference of Social Welfare and served as vice president of the Morton County Historical Society.
George also served as bailiff for Morton County Court for approximately 20 years. George was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and Elks clubs and a member of the Eagles Club and St. Anthony Verein.
George is survived by six sons and four daughters-in-law, Frank, Ray and Annella, Arnold and Georgian and Bob and MaryAnn, all of Mandan, and Leo and Ron and Betty, all of Bismarck; five daughters and sons-in-law, Helen and Bill Kuntz and Eldean and Bill Fitterer, all of Mandan, Carolyn and Richard Bullinger, Bismarck, Janice and Ed Fitterer, Dickinson, and Laura and Richard Wicaryus, Illinois; 34 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and two great-great- grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose; the first of two daughters named Janice; four brothers, Alex, Joe, Frank and Anton; four sisters, Anna, Minnie, Kathie and Monica; one granddaughter, Keri Leingang; two grandsons, Eric Leingang and Michael Leingang; and one daughter-in-law, Eileen Leingang.
