Dad was a first-generation American and was very proud of his German heritage. His schooling ended in the 7th grade when he was needed to help on his father's farm. Besides farming, he also worked in the coal mines before becoming a carpenter. During WWII he moved his family to Nevada and Idaho, working on construction sites. In the early 40s he was hired as a carpenter in Yakima. He started his own general construction company shortly after. With no formal education he designed residences, drew blueprints and built many homes and commercial buildings throughout the Yakima Valley for 45 years.
In the 40s and 50s he played drums in his dance band, performing at the local lodge dances. German polkas were among the "top hits"! With no formal musical training he also played the piano, accordion and the harmonica. He was a very good dancer, especially the polka. He loved to travel in his RV, fish, play cards, watch "The Price is Right" and baseball games. Most of all, he loved his family and they loved him. He was so very proud of his children and grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the Keith & Keith Ninth Avenue Chapel.
