William Duppong
GLENULLIN- William J. Duppong, Sr., 93, Glen Ullin died Nov. 20, 2005, while a resident of the Marian Manor Health Care Center, Glen Ullin. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin with the Rev. Sebastian Schmidt, OSB as celebrant. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the church, where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m.
William was born Nov. 5, 1912, in rural Glen Ullin, the son of Joseph P. and Rosa (Filibeck) Duppong II. He was raised on the farm North East of Glen Ullin. He married Hilda Gietzen May 10, 1938, at Sacred Heart Church. They raised their large family on the beef, dairy and grain farm North West of Glen Ullin. Music was an important part of his life, so in his younger years he played accordion in the Duppong Brothers Band. He also enjoyed baseball and horse shoe. Bill was one of the first in the area to have a snow blower, and was called upon by the county on a number of occasions to remove snow.
Bill was also busy with the telephone lineman duties of Fertile Valley Telephone Co. Bill was an active member of the St. Clement's Parish, St. Clements Men's Confraternity, and Knights of Columbus Third and 4th degree. He was also a director for the Farmers Union and a 4-H leader for many years.
Hilda died Feb. 2, 1982. Following the death of Hilda, William later married Minnie Gartner Miller April 23, 1984. Following this marriage they resided in New Salem. During his retirement years Bill enjoyed mending clothes for family and friends, he also liked to play cards and visit with the neighbors and friends. They moved to Marian Manor Apartments in Glen Ullin in 2001. Minnie died June 19, 2003. Bill entered the Marian Manor Health Care Center in November 2003 where he has resided since.
He is survived by his children, Wayne (Donna), Bismarck, Denis (Jean), Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Kenneth (Mary Ann), Glen Ullin, Jerry (Beverly), Bismarck, Bill (Brenda), Glen Ullin, Jean (Jim) Wanner, Hebron, Elaine (Bob) Herz, Glen Ullin, Carol (Don) Cardwell, Jonesburough, Tenn., and Sharon (Aaron) Steinwand, Bishop, Calif.; 46 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Anton (Marge) Duppong, St. Paul, Minn., and Leo (Claudia) Duppong, Glen Ullin, and one sister-in-law, Angela Duppong.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Allan; his sisters, Catherine Seeberger Nelson, Agnes Duppong and Louise Wehri; and his brothers, Louis, Joseph, Ernest and Steve.
