Franklin K. Gartner, 70, passed away at St. Alexius Medical Center surrounded by his family on Dec. 26, 2010. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher as celebrant. Burial will be at? Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where there will be a St. Anthony Verein rosary at 7 p.m. followed by a parish vigil. Visitation will continue on Wednesday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Weigel Funeral Home. There will be no visitation at the church.
Franklin was born Oct. 30, 1940, to Frank P. and Elizabeth (Leingang) Gartner in Mandan. He grew up on the farm west of St. Anthony. He attended and graduated from Rural School No. 1.
He met Leona Gangl in 1957, and they were married Oct. 8, 1960. They lived on the Gangl family farm, which they bought in 1964. They raised their family of two sons and four daughters there. Franklin retired from farming in 1996 due to his health.
Franklin was active in and served his community in various ways. He was an active member and officer of the St. Anthony Verein for many years. Franklin was a board member of Little Heart School District for six years. He was instrumental in getting the Mandan Rural Fire Department to St. Anthony. Franklin was also a member of that board, as well as serving as a volunteer fireman for many years.
Franklin will be deeply missed by his wife of 50 years, Leona; four daughters, Marie (Jim) Nelson and Deb (Paul) Kramer, all of Bismarck, JoAnn (Keith) Humann, Linton, and Carol Lanich and friend, Tom Lovell, Gillette, Wyo.; two sons, Tom, St. Anthony, and Joe (Tiffany), Menoken; three granddaughters; four grandsons; one step-grandson; sister, Donna (Larry) Chesak, Bismarck; two brothers, Mike (Suzette), Mandan, and Justin (Pam), Highlands Ranch, Colo.; and sister-in-law, Helen Gartner, Bismarck.
Franklin was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, David.
