Catherine (Loran) McBride MISSOULA - Catherine (Loran) McBride, also known as Kate McBride was a descendent of "Black Sea Germans." Her four grandparents all came over to the U.S. from the Black Sea area of southern Russia where they were wheat farmers who lived in German -speaking colonies. After arriving in America, some of them settled in the Richardton, N.D., area where Kate was born Feb. 24, 1917, to Jacob and Mary (Fitterer) Loran. She was the second oldest of 10 children. When she was 6, her father got a job working for the Northern Pacific Railroad in Missoula and moved the family there. Kate could only speak German when they arrived and had to learn English quickly when she started school that fall. She spent her remaining "growing up" years in Missoula. After Kate started high school her mother pulled her out of school to help raise the younger kids. In 1935, she met Forest McBride and they were married that June 1. Their first home was at the Fox Farm up Rattlesnake Creek where Forest worked pelting foxes. In 1941, they bought a house on Poplar Street on Missoula's "east side," By this time two children had been born, Forest Dale Jr. in 1936 and Lucinda (Cindy) in 1939. In 1947, Forest began working for the Montana Power Co. and in 1952 they transferred him to Billings and the family settled into a new house there. Kate began working for the Hart-Albin store in 1954 and stayed with them until Forest died of lung cancer in 1967, whereupon Montana Power offered her a job. She accepted and stayed with them until she retired in 1982. After retiring, she moved to Missoula and bought a place in the South Hills area. In 2007, she sold her home and moved to the Village Senior Residence, a Missoula retirement home. She lived there until she died Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011, at St. Patrick Hospital. Kate loved to travel, whether it be to a favorite camping spot or a cruise to Alaska, the South Sea Islands or to Europe. She is survived by her son Forest; daughter Cindy (Rod) Cone; a brother, Jacob (Eleanor) Loran; a sister, Anne (Bud) Wilcox; three grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 5, at Garden City Funeral Home.
