Wednesday, September 28, 2011 1:47 PM CDT Irene Walz 09/16/11 Irene Losing was born on Feb. 18, 1928, to Konrad and Paulina Stoebner Losing. She was the seventh of eight children in the family. Irene grew up on farms in the Tripp, Tyndall and Avon, S.D., areas and attended a rural school. She was confirmed at the Reformed Church in Tripp. Irene married Winfred Edward Walz on Feb. 25, 1945 at Scotland, S.D., in her minister's home. They farmed in the Freeman and Tripp S.D., areas. After retiring from farming, they moved to Freeman. Irene worked as an apartment manger for Skogen Company and cleaned the Rural Medical Clinic in Freeman. But her favorite job was in the cafeteria at the Freeman Elementary School. Irene was an excellent homemaker who enjoyed cooking, baking, cleaning, gardening and singing. Advertisement Winfred died in 1998 after 53 years of marriage. She remained in Freeman until September 2009. Irene then moved into Bethesda of Beresford, nursing home in Beresford, S.D. She died Friday, Sept. 16, 2011 at Sanford Hospital at the age of 83 years, six months and 28 days. She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Freeman. Grateful for sharing Irene's life are her daughters: Carol (Gene) Thormodsgaard, Beresford and Brenda (Jeffrey) Resnick, Foster City, Calif.; three grandsons: Tyson (Jenni) Thormodsgaard, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Trent Thormodsgaard, Beresford and Adam Resnick, Berkeley, Calif.; two great-grandchildren: Collin and Annika Thormodsgaard, Council Bluffs; one brother, Harry (Hertha) Losing, Yankton, S.D.; one sister, Darlene Nellis, Lead, S.D.; one brother-in-law, Ray Walz, Archbold, Ohio; and one sister-in-law, Beverly Walz, Springdale, Ariz. Irene will be remembered for her physical and emotional strength, devotion to family and sense of humor.
