William J. Schumacher, age 80 of Massillon, went to his heavenly home Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011 following a brief illness. He was born Sept. 6, 1931 in Louisville, the son of the late Nicholas J. and Estella M. (Wahl) Schumacher. William was a veteran of the Army and served during the Korean War. He retired in 1993 from IBM where he was a service representative for 39 years. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church where he graciously served as an usher and Father's right hand man. William was a talented wood worker and an enthusiastic handyman. His big heart always put the needs of others before his own. William was full of life, his hobbies included: bike riding, water skiing, snow skiing, participating in local car shows with the families restored 1907 Cadillac and cheering on his beloved football team, the Louisville Leopards.
William was a loving husband and is survived by Dorothy (Herrala) Schumacher with whom he would have celebrated 56 years of marriage on Nov. 19. He was a wonderful father to three children, daughter, Theresa Custer of Canton; and two sons, Philip M. (Cheryl) Schumacher of North Canton, and Stephen C. (Lori) Schumacher of Hoover, Ala.; devoted grandpa to Abigail, Emily, and Victoria Custer, Katlyn, Sari, and Seth Schumacher. Also survived by his brothers and sisters, Norbert and Kenneth of Louisville, Shirley Reichard of Canton and Loretta Paynter of Zanesville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by infant daughter, Linda Marie; and brother, James Schumacher.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011 from 5-8 p.m. at Heitger Funeral Home - Massillon Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Edward Gretchko celebrant. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Memorial Fund, 726 First St. N.E., Massillon, Ohio 44646.
