Elmer J. Carpenter
MOUNT VERNON ? Elmer J. Carpenter, 86, of Mount Vernon died June 24, 2004, at the Kobacker House in Columbus.
He was born Feb. 28, 1918, in Monroe County to Clifford and Pearl (Stephens) Carpenter. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Gen. Patton?s 3rd Army, Company K, 357th Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, European Theater Operations receiving the Gold Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars. He was a member of the American Legion Post 578 in Batesville, Ohio, and the VFW Post 07671 in Fredericktown. After retiring from the former Continental Can Co. after 33 years as a photo engraver, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf as well as the Cleveland Indians. He was a strong family man who was a kind, loving, hardworking soul of integrity with strong opinion.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Geraldine M. (Howiler) Carpenter; daughter, Cheryl L. Summers of Columbus; a granddaughter, Michelle Croswell of New Albany; three great-grandchildren, Samuel Owen and Elizabeth Anne Croswell, and Shaun Michael Barnett; a brother, Neil (Barbara) Carpenter of Mount Vernon; two sisters, Evelyn McCleary and Judy Clevenger, both of Mount Vernon; many nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Juanita Carpenter of Martinsburg, Mary Carpenter of North Liberty, Nora Carpenter of Mount Vernon; aunts, Wilma Morris of Pataskala and Lily O?Leary of Washington, Pa.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by six brothers, Harold, Francis, Edward, Virgil, Robert and Irvin Carpenter; and four sisters, Viola Robinson, Betty Carpenter, Joann Carpenter and Mary Ann Davis.
Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 5 in the North-Dilley Funeral Home, where the funeral will be Monday at 1 p.m. Pastor Dan Taylor will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens with military honors being conducted by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council. This obituary may be viewed online at www.dilleyfuneralservice.com.
