  In 1882, when Fred Bintz was of an age for armed service, in order to avoid the draft he obtained a pass to come to the United States. It was planned that Louis (next younger in the family) would come with him, & the parents paid money to someone who was to deliver the pass at the boat. Somehow, the pass was never produced & Louis smuggled himself on to the boat with another family. Louis was 16 years old but small for his age. At Amsterdam they were all supposed to show their passes but Louis hid himself under a bunk & escaped detection. Grandma Bintz had sewn some money inside his shirt so that he would have a little on which to get along until he could get work when he arrived in this country. While on the ship, Louis befriended another shipmate who was seasick. Later this would be friend robbed him when he was asleep & Louis arrived in this country without any money. How Louis was able to get past immigration authorities in New York & get together with Fred, & finally arrive in Philadelphia, is a portion of the story that is lost. Louis worked in a button factory for awhile in Philadelphia, later moving to Peoria, IL, and subsequently to the Raymond, MN area where the rest of the family was located by that time. Fred went to Vineland, NJ where he lived for several years. Then he went to MN.
