Arthur Handel Sr.
SCOTLAND -- Arthur Handel, Sr. died on Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at the Scotland Good Samaritan Center.
Funeral service is at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 20, 2004, at United Church of Christ, Scotland, South Dakota. Clergy is Pastor Del Neumeister. Organist is Shirley Orth, and a duet is by Brenda Handel Johnson and Annaeka Johnson.
Casketbearers are John Russell, Kay MacClure, Susan Sedlacek, Joan Wilka, Brenda Handel Johnson and Thea Dalvand.
Interment is in Rosehill Cemetery, Scotland, South Dakota

Arthur Emanuel Handel, Sr. was born on February 22, 1906, at Menno, South Dakota, the oldest of Christian and Katharina (Mettler) Handel's five children. He was baptized by Rev. Bodemann in 1906 and confirmed by Rev. Ritterzhaus in 1920 at Frieden's Church in Menno. He attended Castle Township Country School near Menno through the 8th grade. From 1922 through 1924, he studied mechanics, plumbing and electrical at the technical school in Tripp, South Dakota. Arthur had excellent mechanical skills and could tear apart and rebuild any car or tractor engine. He married Viola Herrboldt on March 2, 1930 in Menno. They were married 51 years until her death on November 28, 1981. They farmed 2 1/4 miles north of Scotland, South Dakota, and Arthur raised registered Hereford cattle. He was a lifelong farmer, from 1930 until 1985, and still fed cattle in 1996 at 90 years old. He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Scotland and served on the church council. Arthur was a longtime member of the American Hereford Association and the South Dakota Hereford Association, of which he was past president. He was married to Tracy Blume from 1984 until 1994. Arthur entered the Scotland Good Samaritan Center on September 3, 1997, and was an active participant in the many activities there.
Arthur's memory will be cherished by his son, Arthur (Patricia) Handel, Jr. of Rapid City, South Dakota; seven grandchildren: John Russell, Kay MacClure, Susan Sedlacek, Joan Wilka, Brenda Handel Johnson, Thea Dalvand and Lisa Dalvand; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and son-in-law, Dale Russell.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Viola (Herrboldt) Handel in 1981; his daughter, Arleen Vesta Russell; his parents, Christian and Katharina (Mettler) Handel; two brothers, Ervin and Ruben; and two sisters, Elsie and Esther.
