GILBERT L. MENKEL (ROY) , 76, OF NORMAN, OKALAHOMA, DIED ON
FRIDAY EVENING, NOVEMBER 15, 1968, AT THE VETERANS ADMINISTRATION
HOSPITAL IN NORMAN.
HE WAS BORN IN MILTONSBURG, OHIO, ON FEBRUARY 10, 1892, THE SON
OF EDWARD H. AND EMMA L. MENKEL. THE FAMILY MOVED TO WOODSFIELD THE
FOLLOWING YEAR.
MR. MENKEL WAS A VETERAN OF WORLD WAR I, SERVING WITH THE FIRST
DIVISION THROUGHOUT THE WAR. HE WAS A CHARTER MEMBER OF MONROE POST
NO. 87, AMERICAN LEGION, IN WOODSFIELD; A MEMBER OF THE V.F.W. IN
NORMAN, AND A 32ND DEGREE MASON THERE.
SURVIVING ARE FOUR BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS, CLYDE MENKEL,
WILLIAM MENKEL, AND MRS. ALMA HIGHMAN, OF WOODSFIELD; MRS. EDNA
GUSTELY, OF AKRON; MRS. CLEO MOORE, OF CANTON; HAROLD R. MENKEL, OF
LIVINGSTON, TEXAS, AND EDWARD H. MENKEL, OF SAN BERNARDINO,
CALIFORNIA. TWO SISTERS PRECEDED HIM IN DEATH.
BURIAL WAS IN CUSHING, OKLAHOMA, IN ACCORDANCE WITH HIS WISHES.
HE HAD LIVED IN CUSHING MANY YEARS BEFORE MOVING TO NORMAN. HE LEFT
WOODSFIELD IN 1912.
