Bessie M. Shinaberry, age 86, of Mount Vernon and formerly of Mount Gilead, died Wednesday evening, November 19, 2008, at the Laurels of Mt. Vernon following an extended illness.
On October 4, 1922, Bessie was born in Belmont County, Ohio, the daughter of the late Albert and Lela (Neuhart) VanHorn. She graduated from Chesterville High School in the Class of 1942, where she won the Home Economics Award and a trip to Chicago with her teacher.
Shortly after falling for a young farmer from Chesterville, Ronald Shinaberry, whom she met at the Chesterville Grocery store, they married on December 17, 1943. Together they raised their three sons and operated their dairy farm in Chesterville. He preceded her in death on April 11, 1983.
A wonderful homemaker, Bessie was an excellent cook, baker, and enjoyed decorating birthday and wedding cakes for her family and friends. She also enjoyed getting her hands dirty in her garden and mowing her yard.
A woman of deep faith, Bessie was originally a member of the Pulaskiville Community Church, and later of the Waterford Church of Christ with her husband, where they were both baptized into the church.
Always giving back to her community, Bessie was active in the Yankee Street Ladies Aid and Garden Club. She was a 50 plus year member of the Berlin Grange in Knox County, and also was active in the Morrow County Republican Woman?s Group.
Bessie will be dearly missed by her two sons and their spouses: Allen (Sandi) Shinaberry of Maumee, and Duane (Marcia) Shinaberry of Mount Gilead; four grandchildren: Michelle Shinaberry of Dublin, Chris (Suzette) Elliott of Mountain View, California, Scott Shinaberry of Dublin, and Sean (Jenna) Shinaberry of Swanton, Ohio; a brother, William (Alice) VanHorn of Chesterville; a sister, Mary Underwood of Caledonia; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Including her husband and parents, Bessie was preceded in death by son, Roy Shinaberry.
The Shinaberry family will greet friends from 2 ? 6 p.m. on Sunday, November 23, 2008, at the Snyder Funeral Home, 76 S. Main St., Mt. Gilead, where services celebrating her life will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Don Linn officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery in Chesterville.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association, 471 E. Broad St., Suite 1630, Columbus, Ohio 43215.
