- [S927] Obituary.
Earl 'Mike' Hendershot
SUPERIOR - Earl "Mike" Hendershot, 82, retired from the U.S. Forest Service and a Navy veteran of World War II, died Friday, April 23, 2004, at Mineral Community Hospital of natural causes.
Mike was born Jan. 14, 1922, in Malta, the son of Frank and Elizabeth (Adams) Hendershot. He was raised and educated in Malta, and graduated from Malta High School in 1941.
He entered the Navy in 1942 and served in the Asiatic Pacific. In 1948 he received his honorable discharge.
Mike married Shirley Clark in Richmond, Va., on Aug. 5, 1944. They resided in Malta until 1958, when they moved to Sandpoint, Idaho. There he worked as a logger. In 1959 they moved to Superior, where Mike spent the next 33 years working for the Superior Ranger District.
He enjoyed gardening, golfing, and took great pride in his beautiful yard. Mike loved to please his family and friends with a spectacular light display at his home. For the past two years he was unable to do this by himself, but his children and grandchildren came to the rescue and kept the tradition going.
He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was very generous with his family and loved the time he spent with them. He always looked forward to mealtime since he loved Shirley's cooking.
Mike was a 41-year member of the BPOE (Elks) and a 20-year member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife Shirley E. Hendershot of Superior; daughters Vickie (Jim) Gellein and Mikie (Bob) Dent, both of Superior; son Steve (Dixie) Hendershot of Superior; five grandchildren, Tammy (Dave) Wieweck of Lewistown, Shannon (Hill) Williams of Seattle, Joe Vigue of Phoenix, Rachel Vigue of Superior and Steve (Donna) Scott of Pittsburg, Mo.; two great-grandchildren, Starr Wieweck of Lewistown and Taylor Scott of Pittsburg; and two sisters, Bonnie Watkins of Malta and Dot Hulquist of Sandpoint.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents and sister Grayce Sutton.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, at the Superior Senior Citizens Center. Interment with military honors of his cremated remains will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 1, at the Malta Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Mineral Community Hospital in Superior or the Little White Church in Malta.
Adams Funeral Home and Crematory in Malta is in charge of arrangements.
