Denver L. Guthrie, 80, of Vienna passed away July 7, 2006, at his residence.
He was born April 24, 1926, inReedy, W.Va., a son of the late Elra and Goldie Phillips Guthrie. Denver entered into the service at the age of 17 during World War II. He was with the 338thBomb Squadron - 96th Bomb Group of the Army-Air Corp as a Ball Turret Gunner on a B-17 Bomber having served in England and Germany. After returning home, he worked at Corning Glass and later at E.I. DuPont. In 1948, he joined the Army National Guard 1092nd BN Engr., and in 1950 he entered the Korean War with the 1092nd. After the war, he worked with the AASF, Army Aviation Support Facility, at the Wood County Airport and was a sergeant major with the 1092nd.
Denverretired in 1986 at the age of 60 as state command sergeant major with 36 yearsof military service. After retiring, Denver worked for Rambar Aviation as a mechanic until 1990; received schooling for EAA technical counselor for experimental air craft builders; and was an air frame and power plant mechanic with inspection authorization. Denver was a private pilot since 1947, having built and flown Gyro-Coptor and Breezy Air Craft and numerous other air craft. Denver was a member of the VFW of Parkersburg; American Legion Post 15, Color Guard; Experimental Air-Craft Association; Mid-Ohio Valley Aviation Association; 96 Bomb Group Association; 8th Air Force Historical Society; NCO Club of the 1092nd; and the NRA. As a volunteer, he was technical advisor at several air shows, including Wood County, Oshkosh, Wis., and the Fun in the Sun Show, Lakeland, Fla. He was a volunteer for the Boy Scouts as an explorer advisor, where he flew more than 100 Eagle Scouts for their badge work and was a volunteer at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. He attended the Stephenson United Methodist Church.
Surviving is his wife of 58 years, Vivian Pfalzgraf Guthrie; two daughters, Debbie Guthrie of Vienna and Karen (Jeff) Ritchie of Washington, W.Va.; one granddaughter, Amber (Tony) Phillips of Washington; one brother, Bevan (Dolores) Guthrie ofParkersburg; one sister, Norma (Charles) Smith of Parkersburg; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Green Street, Parkersburg, with the Rev. Terry Alvarez officiating. Interment will follow at the Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery, with full military rites by the American Legion Post 15. Visitation will be 4-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
The family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society or to House-Calls Hospice.
