Matthew Kates Chew, age 91, of 18 West Jefferson Avenue, Shelby, died unexpectedly Saturday, October 4, 1997 at MedCentral Shelby Hospital.
He was born August 12, 1906 in Martins Ferry, Ohio the son of Herbert M. and Mary Josephine (Weisend) Chew. He graduated in 1923 from Martins Ferry High School, and was a graduate of Adelbert College in Cleveland in 1927 and the Law School of Western Reserve University in 1929. He was admitted to the practice of law in 1929. He practiced law in Youngstown, Ohio for 14 years and Columbus Ohio for 6 years. He moved to Shelby in 1949 and was counsel for the Shelby Mutual Insurance Company until his retirement in 1970. In January of 1970 he was employed as a referee for the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services until retiring in 1976.
He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Mansfield and Shelby Masonic Lodge #350 F and AM, Scottish Rite, Valley of Columbus, and Al Koran Shrine in Cleveland. He was a Charter member and former secretary of the Shelby Elks Club and a long time member of the Shelby Country Club.
He is survived by 3 sons and daughters-in-law, Matthew K. and Lucille 'Tillie' Chew of Scottsdale, Arizona, Robert N. and Dorothy Chew of Shelby, and Phillip H. and Jane Chew of Shelby; 1 daughter, Jann Seville Chew of Shelby ; 7 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 1 sister Josephine Chew of Clearwater, Florida. He was preceded in death by his wife, Seville Wyckoff Chew in 1990, 2 sisters, Marie Reddy and Helen Nacey and by 2 brothers, Robert Chew and Herbert Chew.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Turner Funeral Home in Shelby. Funeral service will be on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Shelby with Rev. Canon David S. Sipes officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Memorial expressions may be made to the Shelby Home and Public Health.
