Andrew Preston died peacefully surrounded by much of his family at his home in Kinnelon, N.J., on Oct. 31, 2012. Viewing hours will be held 4 to 8 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 4, at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, Pompton Plains, N.J. A Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 5, at Our Lady of the Magnificat Church Chapel, Kinnelon. Entombment will follow at the church cemetery. Andrew was born on April 19, 1922, in Brooklyn, N.Y., as the only child of Charles and Josephine Pumo. He worked his way through college bartending in the Ebits Field clubhouse of the Brooklyn Dodgers and was graduated from Saint John's University in 1942 with a degree in Pharmacy. Andrew served in the U.S. Navy in World War II as a gunnery officer on high-octane tankers and on forward bases in the South Pacific. Upon his discharge from the Navy as a lieutenant, Andrew served as an undercover agent for the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, battling drugs and corruption in the New York Metropolitan area. In the 1950's, Andrew opened Preston Drug and Surgical Company in Boonton, N.J., which he owned and operated along with his wife, Martha Jeanne (Marty), for 37 years until the 1980s. Andrew met Marty Happ of Pittsburgh, Pa., in Havana, Cuba, while vacationing in 1952 and they were married Oct. 10, 1953. Marty, who passed away in August 2009, was the love of his life. They moved to Smoke Rise in Kinnelon with their six children in 1963, where he was an active member of the Smoke Rise Club, Knights of Columbus, and Our Lady of the Magnificat Parrish. Andrew was the president of the N.J. Pharmaceutical Association and was on the Board of the Morris County Drug Abuse Council. He was active in the Republican party throughout his life and served as the chairman of various political action committees. Andrew is survived by his six children, Andrew Jr. of Atherton, Calif., Charles (Rick) of Jacksonville, Fla., Carolyn of Peachtree City, Ga., Frank of Spring Lake, N.J., Joanne of Broad Brook, Conn., and Barbara of Kinnelon, as well as 14 grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations in Andrew's memory to Several Sources in Ramsey, N.J., would be appreciated by his family.
