Helen Bamberger Hazel 'Mother Helen'

Helen Bamberger Hazel "Mother Helen," 88, of 1029 Standish Place, Owensboro, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at home. She was born in Daviess County on July 5, 1916, to the late Arch and Viola (Lingang) Bamberger. As the first cashier at Owensboro's Kurtz Auction & Realty Co., she spent many Saturdays with her auctioneer husband. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Altar Society. An avid bridge player from the age of 16, she was a member and director of the American Contract Bridge League and earned the Lifemaster award. She was a member and past president of Our Lady of Mercy Hospital Auxiliary and was a volunteer at the hospital. In addition to playing bridge, Mother Helen enjoyed fishing, cooking and canning, visiting neighbors and spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy W. Hazel Jr., on Sept. 25, 1989; and by two sisters, Mary Jean Hurst and Joann Bamberger.
Survivors include a son, James W. Hazel of Thruston; a daughter, Nanette Hazel of Louisville; three grandchildren, Zach Callery and wife Melanie of Louisville, J.W. "Jay" Hazel Jr. and wife Paula of Knottsville and Joelle (Hazel) Leali and husband Robert of New Orleans; six great-grandchildren, Madison Callery, Maxwell Guy Callery, Jaclyn Hazel, Joshua Hazel, Justin Hazel and Jenna Leali; a brother, Arch Bamberger Jr. and wife Romanda "Pokie" of Owensboro; and several nieces and nephews.
Services are at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Owensboro. Burial is in St. William Church Cemetery in Knottsville. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at James H. Davis Funeral Home, where prayers will be said at 6 p.m. Friday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Hospice and Palliative Care of the Ohio Valley, 723 Harvard Drive, Owensboro, KY 42301 or Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 4029 Frederica St., Owensboro, KY 42301 or to the Passionist Nuns, 8564 Crisp Road, Whitesville, KY 42378.
