Darwin Delmer Nuss was born to Arthur and Adeline (Fuerst) Nuss on June 24, 1935 in Tripp SD. He attended school in Tripp and graduated from Tripp High School in 1953. He joined the Air Force right out of high school. He was a photographer in The Air Force. After his four years of service in the Air Force he returned to Mitchell and worked several years as a photographer for the Daily Republic. This is where he met his wife, Shirley Jarabek and married her on May 20, 1961.
While working at the newspaper he also managed the Mitchell Moose Lodge for nineteen years. Around 1985 he took a job managing the Elks for approximately three years. He then ventured to his Marine business. He worked at Dakota Pork and after retiring from Dakota Pork he ran the Marine business fulltime. He sold his Marine business to help and aid Mitchell Vo-Tech in the motor sports area, retiring in June of 2010. But retirement fell short as he began driving for the railroad transport service until the time of his death.
He was a member of the Moose Lodge since 1967 receiving the highest honor of the Pilgrim Degree in May 1983. He was also a member of the American Legion and the Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
When Darwin was not busy, he enjoyed being with his grandchildren, playing cards, boating, fishing and telling stories.
Darwin is survived by his five children: Randy (Faithe) of Mannington WV, Lisa (Glen) Weber, Tim, Jeff (Donna) and Stephanie (Steven) Dirkes, all of Mitchell; sisters: Sally (Jack) Tucek, Platte, Karen (Dan) Weber, Tripp, Gloria (Chuck) Oorlog, North Sioux City NE and Debbie (Todd) Kenworthy, Sandpoint ID; brother, Dale (Jan) Nuss, NH; eleven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
