He married Mary C Hammer in 1880, and was the father of 10 children, John Edward, Frederick, George, Louis, John Raymond, Carl, Edith, Lucille, Marguerette, and Walter. He first worked in the coal mines, then later as part owner of the Blank Brothers Grocery, and later the French Cereal Company, both with his brother William. He was at one time Postmaster of Canal Fulton, and ran for offices in the town on the Democratic ticket. He also was a member of the Canal Fulton Orchestra, and the Imperial Band of Canal Fulton, playing trumpet.
