Mary Elizabeth Latta nee Udell

FORMER MISSIONARY,
SALESVILLE NATIVE, DIES
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Udell Latta, 69, were conducted in Granville last Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with Rev. Harry E. Kruener, pastor of the Granville Baptist church, officiating. Burial was made at Granville.
Mrs. Latta, wife of Rev. J. T. Latta of Granville, died at her home on Thursday of last week. She had been ill since early January.
The daughter of Charles Heidelbach and Emily Peters Udell, she was born at Salesville on Nov. 9, 1879, and was married to John Tilton Latta, Sept. 9, 1905. Mrs. Latta was baptized in the Salem Baptist church by the Rev. Mr. Kerr, and taught in the country schools in Guernsey and Belmont counties for several years.
She later attended the Chicago Baptist Mission Training School, and with her husband sailed for Burma, Oct. 1905, as missionaries serving under the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society. They arrived in Burma in December 1905 and proceeded to Thronez, Burma, where they served as missionaries until April 1, 1940.
Mrs. Latta was a member of the Baptist church in East Cleveland. She is survived by the husband of the home and the following daughters and one son: Mary Elizabeth Latta Becker, Dayton; Margery Genevieve Gibson, Rochester, Minn; Miriam Lois Latta of the home; Emma Merrill Webber, Applegate, Ore., John David Latta, M.D., Danville, Ky. One son, Walter Udell Latta, died in infancy. One sister, Mrs. Carrie McCourt and one brother, Grover Udell, both of Cambridge R.D. survive. Mrs. Laura Galligher and Andrew J. Galligher are deceased. Walter and Emma Udell of New Gottengen are aunt and uncle of the deceased. Her husband is a relative of P.T. Morris, Salesville R.D.
