NORTHPORT - Virginia M. LaBonte, 79, of Northport, died Monday at Leelanau Memorial Health Center in Northport.
She was born in Hamtramck, Mich., on Feb. 28, 1920, to Oliver and Ethel (Labadie) Gilbeau.
Virginia, a homemaker, had lived in Northport for most of her adult life and worked with her husband, Otto, on the family farm there. She enjoyed cooking, Bingo, playing cards and crocheting. A member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Gills Pier, she also attended St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake Leelanau.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy (Frank) Turk of Tennessee and Judy (Ken) Gibler of Buckley; six sons, Otto (Susan) LaBonte of Kissimmee, Fla., Marlin (Peggy) LaBonte of Florida, Carl (Beth) LaBonte of Fife Lake, Daniel LaBonte and Alfred (Dawn) LaBonte - both of Midland, and Albert (Bev) LaBonte of Traverse City; two sisters, Shirley (Frank) Ping of Baldwin and Donna (George) Watt of Benzonia; one brother, Arthur (Evelyn) Gilbeau of Bear Lake; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Otto, on Aug. 5, 1992; one daughter, Theresa LaBonte; two sons, Donald LaBonte and Emil LaBonte; one sister; Gertrude Kalenich; and three brothers, Wilmer Gilbeau, Leonard Gilbeau and Donald Gilbeau.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Pastor Bruce Craner will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a rosary being recited at 7 p.m.
