Entered the community of the Sisters of St Joseph of Carondelet St Louis Province in 1940, and received the habit and the name Sr Mary Cornelius on March 19, 1941.
Taught at St. Francis of Assisi School in Oakville and St. Leo School in St. Louis in the 1940s and at Sts. John and James School in Ferguson in the early 1950s.
Received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Fontbonne College in 1954 and a master’s from St. Xavier College in Chicago in 1967. Taught intermediate and junior high in Peoria, Il., Keshena, Wi., Denver and Indianapolis.
Served as principal at Holy Name School in St. Louis from 1968-74. Was an administrator at schools in Indiana, Texas and Wisconsin.
Keshena, Wi, was her next stop from 1974 to 1980. Had a deep love of the people and seemed to choose to be with the poor whenever she could.
From 1981-92 served as pastoral assistant for a Native American community in Marquette County, Mi. At the age of 72, went to Sacred Heart School in Festus,Mo. where she worked part time as school librarian and spent the rest of the day visiting the sick and shut-ins.
In 1980, served as librarian part time at Sacred Heart School in Festus and visited the sick in their homes. Did volunteer work at St. Joseph’s Academy in 1995-96. Volunteered for four years at Shriners Hospital in Frontenac, Mo.
At 80, retired and moved to Nazareth. Continued to do volunteer work.
Funeral Mass was celebrated at Nazareth Living Center Chapel in South St Louis County, Mo.
