April 4, 2012 Paul Douglas Reiss, 70, of Syracuse, passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2012. Paul was a communicant of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He was a Eucharistic minister and helped the church in many ways, serving at the food pantry and in the Rosary Society. In May, he was to be commissioned in the Ministry of Pastoral Care at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Mr. Reiss served in the U.S.M.C. and was in Guantanamo Bay during the Cuban Missile Crisis in the Naval Gunfire Liaison Team. Paul was honorably discharged 1964 as a corporal. He received a degree in chemical technology from OCC in 1967. Paul was employed at Allied Chemical as a research technician over 12 years. He also volunteered at the American Red Cross. Paul enjoyed his family, taking candid photos and was an avid sports fan who followed Cleveland and Syracuse teams. Paul was predeceased by his parents, Edward H. and Virginia B. (Radziszewski) Reiss, and is survived by daughters Jennifer (Nicholas) Defio of Syracuse and Ann (Thomas) Horth of North Syracuse; grandchildren Nicky, Julie, Ally and Justin; sisters Sharon Meddley of Virginia and Margot (Richard) Cole of Hannibal; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Hollis Funeral Home, 1105 West Genesee Street, Syracuse, NY 13204. Funeral services are 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at Hollis Funeral Home and 9:30 a.m. at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, followed by burial with military honors at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Lakeland. Jeffrey Kent Bissler Jeffrey Kent Bissler
Jeffrey Kent Bissler, 39, passed away on Feb. 22, 2007 following a short illness.
Jeff was born in Akron, Ohio on May 17, 1967 to Gary K. and Claudia J. (Beyers) Bissler. The family moved to Shalersville in 1972 where Jeff resided with his parents until his death.
Jeff was a graduate of Crestwood High School and Maplewood Joint Vocational School where Jeff took the Horticulture program. After high school Jeff worked in landscaping but found his true calling in working with horses. He worked at many horse farms in the Portage and Geauga County areas. He also worked for many years at the Amish Style restaurant at Aurora Premium Outlets, and most recently at Bob Evans in Bainbridge.
Jeff was a talented artist and enjoyed many artistic pursuits. He was a member of the Tree City Woodcarvers and the McCallum Highlanders Band where he was learning to play the bagpipes. He also taught himself to play the harmonica and American Sign Language which he used occasionally at work and at church. He was an active member of New Life Assembly of God in Aurora, Ohio.
Jeff is survived by his loving parents and his sister, Christina (Allen) Putt; his niece, Elizabeth Putt and nephew, Michael Putt, all of Ravenna; and his grandmother, Ruth L. Beyers of Brimfield. He is also survived by many uncles, aunts and cousins and will be especially missed by his loving companion, Annie, a black lab/boxer mix.
He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Ernest E. and Mary L. Bissler and maternal grandfather, Raymond L. Beyers.
Calling hours will be 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007 at the Shorts Funeral Homes, Inc., Streetsboro, Ohio and one hour prior to the 11 a.m. service Monday, Feb. 26, 2007 at the New Life Assembly of God Church in Aurora, with Rev. Nolan Blakkolb Officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery Shalersville, Ohio. Family requests memorials to the New Life Assembly of God Church 911 Orchard Ave., Aurora, Ohio 44202.
