Raymond Ervin Kennedy, 81
CENTRAL BARREN - Raymond Ervin Kennedy, 81, died Monday, September 25, 2006, at his home in Lakeland, FL. Mr. Kennedy was born October 31, 1924 in Central Barren, Indiana to Raymond and Sylvia (Wenning) Kennedy. He graduated from Morgan Township High School in 1942, after which he volunteered to be inducted into the United States Army where he served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre with the 39th infantry as a Platoon Sergeant. He participated in the occupation of Japan before being honorably discharged in 1946. Mr. Kennedy received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1949 from Indiana Central University, where he played varsity basketball, baseball, and football. He then entered the profession of teaching at Pekin High School, where he also served as the varsity basketball coach. He worked there for one year before being called into the Army Reserve where he saw combat as a Sergeant in Korea. Honorable discharged in 1952, he returned to Pekin for one year before accepting the position of head basketball coach at Tell City, IN where his team won the 1954 Sectional Tournament. He entered into school administration in 1955 when he became Principal of West Baden High School. In 1956, he was named Assistant Principal of Martinsville High School. Named principal of the school one year later, becoming the youngest high school Principal in the state. He served in that role for seven years before becoming principal of Frankfort High School in 1965. During this time he achieved a Master of Arts degree and completed his doctoral course work in Education Administration at Indiana University. In 1968 he became an Admissions Director for Ball State University until his retirement in 1989.
Mr. Kennedy is survived by his wife, Nathalia Lee Kennedy; his three children, Barry, Rebecca and Shannon; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and his brother, Lowell "Zeke" Kennedy.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 30, 2006 at the Love Funeral Home in Palmyra, IN. Burial will be in the Palmyra Cemetery in Palmyra, Indiana.
There will be no visitation prior to the service.
