Three Columbus residents, formerly of Monroe County, are dead and a
fourth is in critical condition as a result of a head-on crash between their sedan and
a truck late Friday afternoon on Route 146, seventeen miles southeast of
Zanesville.
Benjamin D. Neisz 68, of 1488 Bryden Road, Columbus and his wife
Margaret, 63, were killed in the crash. Mrs. C.C. (Ida) Gallagher, 72, of 1472
Bryden Road, a passenger in the Neisz automobile died in Bethesda Hospital,
Zanesville at 8:45 p.m., Friday of a skull fracture, about four hours after the
accident.
Another passenger, Mrs. S. A. (Winnie) Moore, 59,of 3759 Washburn
street, Columbus, also formerly of Monroe County, is reported in a critical
condition with a broken leg, crushed hip, several broken ribs, punctured lung and
cuts about the face, at Bethesda Hospital in Zanesville.
The four, all natives of Monroe County and friends for years, were returning
to Columbus from a vacation trip to Woodsfield, which started Tuesday. They had
attended the 100th Anniversary of the Monroe County Fair.
Their auto, a new sedan, owned and driven by Neisz, and a log-laden truck
driven by James R. Murray, 29, of New Concord, collided on a curve on State Rt.
146 near Cumberland. The truck driver was un-injured.
Neisz, an employee of the Franklin County engineer?s office, had been a
farmer in Monroe County all his life until about five years ago, when he sold his
farm and went to Columbus. Both were members of St. Paul?s Evangelical and
Reformed Church at Woodsfield.
Mr. and Mrs. Neisz are survived by one daughter, Mrs. Morris (Marguerite
Little) of Columbus, two sons, Clarence of Woodsfield, and Francis of -_________
and two grandchildren, Marguerite and Robert Little.
Mr. Neisz, a son of the late Henry and Magdalena Niesz is also survived by
three sisters, Miss Anna Niesz, of Woodsfield; Mrs. Hulda Baker, of Canton, and
Mrs. William G. Claus of near Miltonsburg.
Mrs. Neisz, a daughter of the late Jacob and Mary Stauch, is survived by
two sisters; Mrs. Anna Zimpier, of Columbus and Mrs. William (Esther) Miller of
Orlando, Florida; and five brothers, Edward J. Stauch, of Colton, California, nowvisiting Monroe County, Elmer Stauch of Detroit, Michigan; Everett Stauch, of
South Bend, Indiana; Grover G. Stauch and Louis Stauch of Lewisville.
The bodies were brought to the Bauer and Turner Funeral Home on Friday
night. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two o?clock in the Bauer
and Turner funeral chapel, with Rev. E. A. Gradwohl officiating. Burial was in
Friendship Cemetery, Lewisville.
Mrs. Gallagher, a daughter of the late Jas. R. and Marie Jane Arnold, of
Beallsville, had lived in Columbus for 48 years. She belonged to Bryden Road
First Methodist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Mr. George C. McDonald, of Columbus, and
Mrs. McClelland Gregg, of West Jefferson, and two brothers, Clyde Arnold, of
Baltimore, Maryland, and Fred Arnold, of Allentown, Pa. Mrs. Lucy Hine Arnold,
of Woodsfield is a sister-in-law.
Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at 3:30 o?clock in the Cook
and Son Chapel in Columbus. Interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery, Columbus.
Mr. and Mrs. Niesz were very hospitable and friendly people, well known
throughout our County. They carried the same spirit to their Columbus
neighborhood and were planning for the annual Columbus picnic of Monroe
County residents. Hundreds of friends in both communities are grieved at their
death as well as that of Mrs. Gallagher.
