Obituary for Mr. John "Jack" Schappert Joachim, Sr.
John (Jack) Schappert Joachim, Sr., was born on Christmas Day-December 25, 1916, in Biloxi, Mississippi, the son of Uriah Sylvester Joachim and Stella Gillen Joachim. He passed away peacefully on his beloved wife's birthday, September 11, 2012.
Jack is the widower of Rose Lillian Navarro Joachim with whom he fathered twenty children.
He is survived by a brother Harry Joseph Joachim of Biloxi, MS; five sons, John Schappert Joachim, Jr. (Liz) of Biloxi, MS; Robin Jude Joachim, Sr. (Kay) of Baton Rouge, LA; Francis Joseph Joachim (Ann) of Woolmarket, MS; William Dennis Joachim (Vickie) of Biloxi, MS; and Michael Raymond Joachim (Jackie) of Glastonbury, CT; twelve daughters, Mary Martha Joachim Caruso (Sam) of Slidell, LA; Harriet Louise Joachim Leckich (Wayne) of Biloxi, MS; Georgette Clare Joachim Mattina (Rodney/deceased) of Biloxi, MS; Rose Ann Joachim Blessing of Gulfport, MS; Marylyn Theresa Joachim Gibson (Dallas/deceased) of Biloxi, MS; Nancy Helen Joachim Gollott of Biloxi, MS; Mary Jane Joachim Baxter(George) of Purvis, MS; Mary Margaret Joachim Pepper, Ed.D., (David) of Ocean Springs, MS; Maria Adrienne Joachim Pellegrino (Frank) of Biloxi, MS; Marian Virginia Joachim Burdine (Edward/deceased) of Biloxi, MS; Mary Daniel Joachim Whittle (William) of Fort Worth, TX; and Patricia Regina Joachim Creel (Roland) of Ocean Springs, MS, and daughter-in-law Judy Smith Joachim of Covington, LA. He is also survived by fifty-eight grandchildren, seventy-eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to Rose, his wife of sixty-five years, Jack was preceded in death by two sons, Harry Louis Joachim and Gerard O'Connell Joachim; one daughter Mary Elizabeth Joachim; two grandsons, Donovan Boyd Baker and Edward Paul Lynch, Jr.; a brother Mark Gillen Joachim; and two sisters, Margaret Clare Joachim Maddox and Ruth Marylyn Joachim Janca.
Rooted in his Catholic faith, Jack was a life-long member of the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He graduated from Biloxi High School in 1934 and two years later Jack Joachim, Sr., began a career with American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T) Company. He retired as plant manager for the Bell South Telephone Company in 1983 with forty-six years, four months, and twenty days of service.
Jack devoted many hours to community service through his work with the Biloxi Chamber of Commerce and Biloxi Kiwanis Club, having served as president of both organizations. He was a founding member of the Biloxi Fishing Rodeo. Jack was a charter member of "The Bell Ringers", a ham radio club of active and retired employees of the telephone industry.
Jack's children gave him the nickname "Gadget Man", because he enjoyed and mastered anything with a motor, be it on land, water, or in the air. He was a motorcyclist and car enthusiast, speed boat builder and racer, and single-engine seaplane pilot. He was an avid fisherman, professional photographer, and a fan of the latest technological innovations. Reproducing the video of the family's 1958 appearance on the I've Got a Secret TV Show into a DVD was Jack's last passionate hobby. At last count, Jack had made and proudly distributed a gazillion DVDs—mostly to total strangers!
With deepest gratitude the family thanks Rev. Patrick J. Mockler and Rev. Ryan McCoy of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, clergy, religious, relatives, friends, and fellow parishioners throughout the Coast and beyond for the prayers and multiple expressions of loving kindnesses. Special thanks to Marion J. Wainwright, M.D.; to Ericka Nichole Gardner, Jack's personal caregiver; the staff and volunteers at Gulf Shores Adult Day Care; Shannon Spooner; Mark Kluempke; and Jane Fayard, R.N.; and Odyssey Hospice. You put the tender loving care in Jack's health care and blessed us as well. Thank you to Nativity B.V.M. Parish's Bereavement Committee and all the above mentioned Earth Angels who continue to nourish us with their compassion, generosity, and invaluable gifts. We appreciate the blessings that all of you are in our lives. We have a large family; you have made it even larger. Thank you for your warm embrace.
