Mr. Mark Gillen Joachim, 97, of Biloxi, MS, passed away, Friday, July 22, 2011, in Marietta, GA.
Mr. Joachim was born November 24, 1913, in Biloxi, MS, the son of Uriah Sylvester Joachim and Stella Gillen Joachim. He graduated from Biloxi High School in 1931 and later attended Draughon's Business College.
He began a career in federal civil service in February, 1938 with the Federal Housing Administration in Washington, D.C. Three years later he and his wife, Lillie Catherine, returned to Biloxi, where he went to work for the War Department (later Department of Defense) at Keesler A.F.B. His work was interrupted by war service in the Army Air Corps, where he trained as an aerial gunner. He served from June of 1942 to April of 1946. He left the military with the rank of Captain.
From June of 1952 to September of 1973, he worked at Combel's Hardware in Biloxi, which he co-owned with his father and brother, Harry. They and a group of business partners were also the last owners of the Avalez and Riviera Hotels on the Gulf Coast.
In the 1960's he and Harry also ran the Weaver School of Real Estate, the first proprietary school of its type in the state of Mississippi. In May of 1981, Mark spent nine years working for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Biloxi. He retired in August of 1990 at the age of 76.
Mark Joachim was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Lillie Catherine Chinn Joachim, as well as two sisters, Marilyn Janca and Clare Maddox. He is survived by two brothers, John S. "Jack" Joachim and Harry J. Joachim. He is also survived by four children, Gary P. (GeLaine) Joachim of Marietta, GA, Richard M. (Norma) Joachim of El Paso, TX, David Joachim of Slidell, LA, and Cathy Joachim (Tom) Bryant also of Marietta, GA. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Nativity B.V.M. Cathedral, Stained Glass Renovation Fund, 870 Howard Ave., Biloxi, MS 39530
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, July 28, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at Nativity B.V.M. Cathedral where friends may visit from 9:30 a.m. until service time. Interment will follow in Southern Memorial Park. Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home, Howard Avenue, in Biloxi is in charge of arrangements.
