TRAVERSE CITY - Marvin J. O'Brien, 74, of Traverse City, died Friday night, Nov. 7, 2003, at his home after a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).
He was born Dec. 24, 1928, in Lake Leelanau to Earl and Hilda (Priest) O'Brien. He graduated from Lake Leelanau St. Mary's in 1946. On March 26, 1951, he married Arlene Overby of Lake Leelanau, his beloved wife of more than 52 years. They moved to Traverse City in the fall of 1953.
Marvin worked 41 years at the Cone Drive/Textron plant in various positions, retiring as a supervisor in 1991. He was a long-time member of St. Francis parish, where he served as a church lector and a Eucharist minister for the sick.
He was an avid golfer, who especially enjoyed golfing with his brothers. He was an outdoorsman, gardener and a fine craftsman, having rebuilt an aging house on Seventh Street into a lovely home in the Central neighborhood where he and Arlene raised their family. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge in Traverse City.
Marvin is survived by his wife, Arlene; son, Leonard, and his sons Christopher, Timothy and Kyle; son, Robert (Laurie) and sons, Jason and Daniel; son, Ronald (Gus); son, Dale (Tracy) and their children, Neil, Kelsey and Alison; son, William (Laura) and their son, Christopher Both; and loving daughter, Jean (Don) Livingston. All reside in Traverse City.
He is also survived by brothers, Louis (Kay) of Traverse City, Harold (Helen) of Empire, Patrick of Lake Leelanau, Glen (Gail) of Millington, Arthur (Judy) of Stanwood and Dennis (Jane) of Flushing; and sisters, Doris Peplinski of Vassar, Joan Korson of Lake Leelanau and Ann O'Brien of Phoenix, Ariz.; along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Alan, and infant son, Gregory; his parents; brothers, Bernard and James, and infant brother, Francis.
Interment will follow at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Traverse City Record Eagle
