- [S927] Obituary.
TRAVERSE CITY - Ambrose A. Schaub, 90, passed away July 22, 2004, as the result of a heart attack, at the home of his granddaughter. He was working outside in the pond that he loved.
Ambrose was born on December 21, 1913, in the town of Lake Leelanau, to Mark Andrew and Mary Marie (Stimel) Schaub. On August 14, 1933, he married Anna Louise Johnson, who preceded him in death in April of 1987. On June 3, 1988, Ambrose married Eileen Lillian (Loomis) Swanson
Ambrose started out working for Johnson Randolph Wicker Furniture and Koenig Construction. Shortly after their marriage, Ambrose and Anna started a trucking business, doing long-haul trucking. Then they founded Ambrose A. Schaub Excavating. Starting from just a few pieces of equipment, they built it into a prosperous business. At his retirement, in 1989, he sold his business, Ambrose A Schaub and Grandsons, to Elmer's Excavating.
He was a quiet philanthropist, being a founding father of Northwestern Michigan College, the Northwestern Michigan College Maritime Academy, the NMC Observatory, the NMC Madeline and All Faith's Chapel. Many area churches benefited from his generosity, including Saint Mary's of Lake Leelanau, Immaculate Conception, Christ the King and the Carmelite Monastery
Ambrose was a life-time member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 383, where he participated in their drill team. Other memberships included the Operators Union and Knights of Columbus.
He will always be remembered for his love of playing cards, being exceptional at euchre and pinochle. Ambrose had been a frequent visitor to the Senior Citizen Center in the past. Other favorite pastimes were dancing and doing many handcrafts. Before his knees were affected by arthritis, every spring he would traipse the woods of his former farmland, Grey Hawk Subdivision, where he was usually successful in a hunt for morels. At lunch time, Ambrose most often could be found at the South Airport Burger King.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen; by his only child, Avis J. and John C Hanell; three grandchildren, John A and Patty Hanell, Ralph A. and Peggy Hanell, Patricia "Trink" and James Hanes: eight great-grandchildren; 17 great-great grandchildren; step-children, Sharon and Clayton Oxley, Rhonda and Gaylon Harrison and Arthur and Sally Swanson; seven stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; nine stepgreat-great-grandchildren; his sister, Eleanor King; sisters-in-law, Anna and Jessie Schaub; and many nieces and nephews.
Ambrose was preceded in death by his brothers, James, Elmer, Albert, Lawrence, Emmanuel, Alfred, Thomas and Ferman; and sisters, Cealia Drake, Bertha (Betty) Rinehart, Elizabeth Brow and Helen Hunt.
Visitation will be today, July 25, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, July 26, 2004, at 11 a.m., at the Immaculate Conception Church, where friends may call for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the Heart Association, Mass Intentions, the Carmelite Monastery or the charity of your choice.
