WITSBERGER, Melvin Luther, "Hambone", 82, of Wheeling, W.Va., passed away Saturday, February 23, 2013, in Wheeling, W.Va.
Born on April 30, 1930 in Wheeling, he was a son of Charles and Anna (Burkhart) Witsberger, and was the youngest and last surviving member of their nine children.
He is survived by wife of 63 years, Ara Jane (Ullom) "Mickey"; and seven children, Mary Gail Moore (Jim) of Bellaire, Ohio, Therese Anne Edge (Jim) of Wheeling, Elizabeth Ann "Babs" McCauley (Paul) of Baltimore, Md., Mike Witsberger (Susan Hardman) of Wheeling, Rose Marie "Posie" Witsberger of Wheeling, Todd Andrew Witsberger, MD (Kathleen) of Charleston, W.Va. and Melvin Lawrence "Larry" Witsberger (Kathy) of Pittsburgh, Pa. Additionally, he is survived by fourteen grandchildren, Jim, Chris and Elizabeth Moore; Kerrie, Jamie and Danny Edge; Ben Witsberger; Tim and Mandy Braden; Sarah, Emily and Paul Witsberger; and Adam and Samantha Witsberger; and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Melvin was member of St Vincent de Paul Parish. Hambone was a member and officer of Teamster local #697. He worked as a truck driver for over 40 years and retired from Carolina Freight Corporation. He enjoyed his family and grandchildren, Western movies, as well as, working on vehicles and fixing everything. Hambone was well known throughout Elm Grove and was considered a 'character' to all who knew him. His voice and stories commanded the audience of all events. He will be sadly missed.
Friends will be received on Monday, February 25, 2013, from 4-8 pm at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, Elm Grove Chapel, 154 Kruger Street, Wheeling, WV. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am, Tuesday February 26, 2013 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Elm Grove, with the Rev. Gary Neagele as celebrant. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St Jude's Children's Hospital.
