Jacob Doll, 83, Mandan, passed away June 20, 2003, at a Bismarck hospital with his loving family by his side. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Cyprian Meier officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Jake was born Oct. 8, 1919, in Mandan, to Frederick and Helen (Hertz) Doll. He married Clementine Bender on Nov. 12, 1940, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan. His first adventure into employment was a bakery in Mandan. Jake then started his career with the Northern Pacific Railroad. He retired after 37 1/2 years as an engineer for Burlington Northern Railroad.
Jake was well known for his volunteer work after retirement. He was an awesome father, teaching his children and the whole neighborhood how to play softball, badminton, football, basketball and Frisbee, and how to be a good sport. Jake was also an avid fisherman and hunter and card player for many years. During the Christmas season, he brought smiles and laughter to many children and adults by playing Santa at Kirkwood Mall and did many private requested appearances.
Jake delivered Meals on Wheels, drove the RSVP bus and called bingo at the Mandan Senior Center. His entire life was devoted to his family and nature. Jake shared his laughter with many a friend by always having a fireball or dum dum sucker for them. He received several awards for his volunteer work. Jake's presence was requested by the president of the United States, Ronald Reagan, to receive his "Volunteer of the Year" award. His loving wife accompanied him.
Jake is survived by his wife, Clementine; seven children, Linda (Kasper) Erhardt, Grand Forks, Karen Doll, Olympia, Wash., Jacob F., Center, Kathy (Dan) Bauer, Mandan, Darlene LeBlanc, Drayton, Bonnie (David) Vogel, Mandan, and Teresa (Kevin) Schreck, Park River; 25 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, George and Anton (Kathrine), both of Bismarck; three sisters, Magdaline Emil, Newcastle, Wyo., Irene Boehm, Billings, Mont., and Justine Voss, Concord, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandsons, Thomas James Doll and Glenn Smith; his brother, Adam; and one son-in-law, Bill Le Blanc. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)
