Martin D. Bender, 82, 2326 County Road 136, St. Anthony, died Jan. 4, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Robert E. Feeney officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a St. Anthony Verein rosary at 8.
Martin Bender was born Feb. 15, 1915, in St. Anthony. He was the son of Dominic and Anna (Leingang) Bender. Martin was raised and educated in St. Anthony. He married Katherine Renner, Oct. 19, 1937, in St. Anthony. They farmed in the St. Anthony area until retiring in 1979 and moving into St. Anthony.
Martin was a member of St. Anthony Verein where he held the position of treasurer for several years. He also served on the school board of the Little Heart District.
He is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, James and Joann, and Dennis and Marlene, all of Mandan, Richard and Barbara Jean, Maple Grove, Minn., and Charles and Gladnie, Upland, Calif.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Patricia and Tony Kautzman, Mandan, and Sherry Bender, St. Anthony; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and three sisters and one brother-in-law, Thelma Bogglin, Coronado, Calif., Clara Renner, Merritt, Island, Fla., and Clementine and Jacob Doll, Mandan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Katherine, who died Sept. 20, 1996; five brothers, Adam, Jack, George, Anton and Nick; three infant brothers; and four sisters, Francis and Regina Bullinger, Mary Stumpf and Rose Hellman.
