ROCHESTER -- The funeral for Darrel L. Johnson will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Autumn Ridge Baptist Church in Rochester, with the Rev. C. John Steer officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Johnson, 87, a member of the Minnesota Aviation Hall of Fame, died of natural causes Sunday (May 21, 2006) at Saint Marys Hospital.
Born Aug. 2, 1918, in Barron, Wis., he worked at Wold-Chamberlain Field in Minneapolis as a youth to pay for flight lessons. During WWII, he served in the Army Air Corps, 8th Air Force, as a pilot and flight instructor and patrolled the Panama Canal in a P38. On Nov. 19, 1946, he married Irene M. Yetzer in Rosemount, Minn. They moved to Rochester where he worked for Gopher Aviation and, later, Neuman Air Charter as a flight instructor, FAA examiner and charter pilot. His wife was a homemaker and volunteer at Rochester Methodist Hospital. He continued doing flight examinations until his health failed. In 2001, he was inducted into the Minnesota Aviation Hall of Fame.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, James L. (Pamela) of Chaska, Minn., Richard E. of Mason City, Iowa, and Robert A. (Mary) of Rochester; three daughters, Carol J. Johnson of Oak View, Calif., Lois A. (Jerry) Halloran of Eagan, Minn., and Sharon K. (Joe) Spencer of Rochester; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald (Merna) of Grand Rapids, Minn.; and a sister, Sylvia (Robert) Mann of Bloomington, Minn. He was preceded in death by two sisters.
Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service Thursday at the church.
