Alvin Guthmiller, 92, Yankton, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2010, at Tripp Good Samaritan Center, Tripp.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Yankton, with the Rev. Steve Weispfennig officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Memories, Yankton. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with a 7:30 p.m. Scripture service. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the services Thursday at the church.
He was born on Sept. 20, 1917, on the family homestead south of Tripp to Ludwig and Lydia (Weisser) Guthmiller.
He attended school through the seventh grade and then worked on the farm due to his fathers ill health.
On Dec. 29, 1943, he married Elaine Schulz.
He farmed the family homestead until 1979, when he moved into Tripp, but continued to do some work on the farm until 1997, when he moved to Yankton.
He was a member of Wesleyan Methodist Church in Avon, where he was a Sunday School superintendent.
After moving to Yankton, he became a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church, where he was a member of the Bible study groups and the Over 50 Fellowship Group.
He is survived by his wife, five children: Louis and wife Jan; and Kevin and wife Michelle, all of Yankton; Marcia Deyalsingh and husband Ron, Ardmore, Okla.; Rodney and wife Ruby, Lesterville; and Monica Johnson and husband Marty, Meckling; 20 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Louis; two grandchildren, his parents, four sisters: Adeline Hahn, Gertrude Ehresmann, Ruth Uecker and Hattie Weisz; and a brother, Harold.
