OBITUARY: Oskaloosa Daily Herald newspaper. Oskaloosa. Wednesday, April 22, 1891.
BLATTNER -- Died at this home 1202 corner Avenue D and L street, Tuesday afternoon, April 21, 1891, of pulmonary complications, Mr. Charles Blattner, aged 45 years, 6 months and 9 days.
Deceased was one of the best known citizens and business men of Oskaloosa, and for several years past has represented the First ward in the City Council. He was born in Xenia, Ohio, October 12, 1845, and came to Iowa, settling in Oskaloosa in 1867. Shortly after his advent here the firm of Blattner & Newbrand was formed and by them the Oskaloosa Brewery was operated until 1882, when the prohibitory law took effect. They then commenced the packing and sale of ice, which has since been successfully carried on. Mr. Blattner also engaged in gardening and for a number of years kept 8 to 12 men employed in this branch.
He was also one of the principal stockholders in the Mahaska County Agricultural Society, and had numerous other business connections in which his counsel and work will be missed. In deeds of charity Mr. Blattner was never found wanting, and the needy always had in him a generous friend.
He was married in June, 1869, to Miss Louise Blattner, also of Ohio, and to them have been born three children. The older one, Rosamond, is now Mrs. J. W. Oliver, of this city. The family have the sympathy of all in their great loss of husband, father and friend. The funeral occurs from the family residence, Thursday afternoon. Rev. Thomas Ballinger will officiate, and the Old Fellows will be in charge. The City Council and officers will attend in a body. Owing to the conditions of the streets, the remains will probably be taken to Forest cemetery on the street cars. Friends of the family are invited to be present without further notice.
