Mathilda Rose Gress
Mathilda Rose Gress, 95, died Jan. 17, 2002, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Vincent's Catholic Church, Crown Butte, with the Rev. William Rushford officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Weigel Funeral Home, where a parish rosary and vigil will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday.
Mathilda Rose Gress was born on the Tipperary Ranch four miles west of Mandan on Feb. 14, 1906, the daughter of Kasper and Julianna (Immel) Gress. On Nov. 24, 1924, she married Peter A. Gress in Prosser, Wash. They moved to North Dakota in 1936, and then spent most of their time farming in the Crown Butte area.
She was very active as a choir and circle member of St. Vincent's Church of Crown Butte and St. Michael's Circle, and was a member of the American Cancer Society. She led the choir at St. Vincent's for 30-some years. Mathilda enjoyed her family, gardening and helping with the farm. She was a very kind, generous and loving person that will be missed greatly by her family and friends.
She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and LaVerne, Center, Harry and Lori, Ulen, Minn., and Dennis and Dawn and Frank and Mary, all of Mandan; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Annabelle Smith, Mandan, JoAnne Ackerson, Detroit Lakes, Minn., Shirley and Jack Dowd, New Richmond, Wis., and Mary and Paul Kottke, Burnsville, Minn.; 37 grandchildren; and 53 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Anton Gress; one infant daughter, Isabel; one grandchild, Beverly; two great-grandchildren, Rachael and Samuel; and two sons-in-law, Robert Smith and Ben Ackerson.
