Ernest Schatzel Sr.
Ernest Howard Schatzel Sr., 81, of New Philadelphia passed away Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at St. Thomas Hospital in Akron, O.
Born April 21, 1922, in Westchester, N.Y., he was the son of the late Ernest Edward and Francis B. (Howard) Schatzel.
Ernest retired from Massillon Bearing in Massillon, O., at the age of 65. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and camping at Bolivar Dam and the Beach City Dam. He also loved woodworking and building things with his hands. His affiliation with the AFL-CIO of Massillon was also very important to him.
Ernest will be greatly missed by those who survive him, including his three daughters, Sandra Slaight of Texas, Katherine (Norwood) Becker of Sugarcreek, Diana Jones of Texas; one son, Ernest (Debra) Schatzel Jr. of Dundee; 13 grandchildren, Tammy (Jody) Norman of Millersburg, Jimmy Hopkins of Saginaw, Mich., Scott Hopkins of New Philadelphia, Casey Slaight, Cody Slaight and Felisha Folks, all of Texas, David Csonka of Alliance, Melinda and Cassaundra Becker of Sugarcreek, Jason (Tia) Schatzel and Seth Schatzel, both of Dundee, and Angel (Frank) Connell and Crystal (Steve) Rowe, both of Texas; and 10 great-grandchildren, Brittany Cox, Shylar Cox and Chase Norman all of Millersburg, Brandon Schatzel, Preston Schatzel and Bailey Schatzel, all of Dundee, and Heather Cantu, Ryan Connell, Kayla Rowe and Tyler Rowe, all of Texas.
In addition to his parents, Ernest was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Billie Jo Jones, and a grandson, Shawn Hopkins.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 28, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home in New Philadelphia. Following visitation, cremation will be conducted through the care of the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Dundee Safe Harbor Rescue Inc., 7553 State Rt. 516 NW, Dundee, O. 44624.
