Flora L. Larscheid died of natural causes on February 19, 2012, in Cheyenne, Wyoming. She was 100 years old.
Born in Mott, North Dakota, April 23, 1911, to Monica Dauenhauer Braun and Bartel Braun, she was christened Florentina Maria Louise. She was eighth of twelve children.
Flora graduated from Mott High School in 1931, and received her elementary school teaching certificate from the State of North Dakota Department of Public Instruction in 1931.
On May 22, 1934, Flora married Harry Henry Larscheid in St. Vincent Catholic Church of Mott. The couple farmed outside of town until they moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1936.
Flora was a pioneer of early child development in South Dakota. She found employment with the Work Projects Administration (W.P.A.) school nursery program in 1940. She helped develop programs and store window displays throughout the stat that promoted nursery school ? a fairly new concept at the time. Of the 2,000 nursery school in the United States, 1,500 were W.P.A. projects. Flora was selected head of the Sioux Falls nursery school, supervising three assistants, a cook and a bus driver. Enrollment was 25 children who were two to four in age. The school, one of three W.P.A. nursery schools in Sioux Falls, was in a building donated by Augustana College. It was funded by the federal government. After federal backing for the program was withdrawn, the Sioux Falls community carried on for a time through funding from the Lutheran Welfare Society of South Dakota.
Flora also worked for a time at Jon Morrell Packing Plant in Sioux Falls in the 1940's.
In 1945 she moved to Dell Rapids, South Dakota where Harry became engaged in raising mink with his brother, Earl Larscheid. He later became foremen of the farm and worked there until his retirement in 1974. Family and friends enjoyed the special treats Flora and Harry made for the holidays. She was a member of the altar Society of St. Mary Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the Catholic Daughters of America.
In 1977 the couple moved to Wheatland, Wyoming. She was a member of Saint Patrick's Church and an active member of the Catholic Altar Society.
In 2008 Flora moved to Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation in Cheyenne.
