llergist helped pioneer asthma treatments
By Sally A. Downey

Herbert Charles Mansmann Jr., 83, of Royersford and Rangeley, Maine, a pioneering pediatric allergist, died of pneumonia Sept. 4 at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, Maine.
In 1968, Dr. Mansmann established the division of allergy and immunology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. He directed the division until 1989, and was professor of pediatrics at Jefferson from 1968 to 2003.
He instituted the Allergy/Immunology Fellowship Program at Jefferson, researched the benefits of magnesium in the treatment of asthma and other diseases, and was one of the first physicians to report the lifesaving potential of ventilators during short, acute asthma attacks.
Asthma can be caused by allergies, air pollution, exercise and stress. It is a leading cause of hospitalization for children.
"Much of medical care is like a brass band," Dr. Mansmann told a reporter in 1986. "However, with its need for fine tuning, asthma can be compared to a symphony orchestra. The doctor, parents and patient have to be in tune with each other."
Dr. Mansmann was an administrator at the former Children's Heart/Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphia in the 1970s and treated a boy, John, with a severe lung condition. Dr. Mansmann and his wife adopted him, and he recovered and went on to lead a normal life, said another son, H. Charles Mansmann III.
In 1990, Dr. Mansmann used magnesium in clinical trials to help members of the Los Angeles Rams football team recover from fatigue during games and practice. This allowed him to fulfill a dream to sit on an NFL bench through several games, his son Charles said.
Dr. Mansmann contributed numerous articles to medical journals and maintained a Web site about his magnesium research. He was working on a book on the subject, which his son, Paris, also an allergist, plans to complete.
A native of Pittsburgh, Dr. Mansmann played football for Cornell University before enlisting in the Army during World War II. Before shipping overseas in 1943, he met Margaret Miller. They corresponded while he was abroad and married in 1947.
Dr. Mansmann was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge and received a Purple Heart. He never spoke about the war, his son Charles said, but 10 years ago when Dr. Mansmann and his wife visited Cologne, Germany, he told her that when he stood in the rubble of a town square in 1945, the only building left standing there was the cathedral.
After his discharge, Dr. Mansmann earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a medical degree from Jefferson. He interned at St. Francis Hospital in Pittsburgh, and completed a residency at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was a fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University, New York University's College of Medicine, and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Before joining the staff at Jefferson, he maintained a pediatric allergy practice in Pittsburgh.
Since 2003, Dr. Mansmann and his wife divided their time between Royersford and Maine. They previously were longtime residents of Newtown Square.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and he skied in Maine, out West, and abroad with his family until he was 70.
In addition to his wife and sons, Dr. Mansmann is survived by sons Kevin and Ian; a daughter, Margaret Karen Mosakowski; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild, and a sister.
A memorial Mass will be said at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 3 at St. Monica Church, 635 First Ave., Berwyn.
