Elverna Milda Stoebner was born on October 30, 1934 to Ewald and Viola (Schelske) Schulz on a farm east of Parkston. She married Aaron Stoebner on November 16, 1952. Aaron served overseas in the Korean conflict shortly after their wedding. That part of her life was spent living with both her parents and her new in-laws, Gottlieb and Emelia Stoebner who farmed north of Tripp. Among other things, one of their wedding gifts from her parents was 2 milk cows that she had milked by hand. They were the foundation for their future dairy herd. All of her children spent many hours in the milk barn.
Elverna took her children to her garden at very young ages. The majority of the care was done by Elverna as she pulled the weeds and later gathered the vegetables for fresh eating, canning or freezing. She had her children at her side, teaching them not to pull the vegetable plants out while they were pulling the weeds. And many times a lesson had to be repeated. During the winter months she enjoyed looking through the Gurney's seed catalog to plan her spring garden.
Elverna was soft-spoken and preferred quiet conversations. She loved to cook, and the freezer and pantry were always stocked with baked goods and meals. Her recipe book is filled with favorites like Cowboy Cookies that were usually baked in quadruple batches, hoping to get some in the freezer.
Her faith in God was an important part of her life. Her Bible and devotional booklet was usually close at hand. She supported her children in activities at school and church. Sunday morning worship was only missed with hospitalization or fever. Her children knew to not bother asking to skip church because that was not an option. As her health declined over the years, her daily Bible readings continued, even when it became difficult for her to see clearly.
Elverna died on January 7, 2016. Her life was shared with her 5 children: Dale, Sioux Falls SD, Gary (Robin), Tripp, SD, Lori Kollmann, Howard SD, Dawn (Greg) Stratman, Owasso OK and Mark, Tripp SD; 12 grandchildren: Joshua, Evan, Audra, Noah Stoebner, Emily (Shad) Quissell, Hannah and Chase Stoebner, Cole, Mackenzie and Nickolas Stratman, Marina and Katie Kollmann, 2 brothers Donald (Vernetta), Parkston SD, and Leon (Carolyn), Menno SD and many other relatives and friends both near and far.
Elverna was preceded in death by her husband Aaron on September 29, 2015, also by her parents Ewald and Viola Schulz, brother Dale Schulz, son-in-law Anthony Kollmann, daughter-in-law Julie Stoebner, grandson Brock Stratman, and her in-laws, Gottlieb and Emelia, Helmuth, Clara, Reno, and Shirley Stoebner.
