- [S927] Obituary.
Sunday, November 20th, 2005 - GUTERL, FRED VINCENT - Fred Vincent Guterl at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, NY , on Friday morning, from complications of an automobile accident he had ten days earlier. Mr. Guterl was born on February 18, 1924 in Pearl River, NY to Alva Thompson and Fred V. Guterl. He was the oldest boy of seven children. As a child he played baseball and football. He also began doing sundry jobs at a very early age - he delivered newspapers, caddied for golfers and set up bowling pins at the local alley, among other things. In 1943 Fred joined the U.S. Marines. He served in the South Pacific during World War II. Shortly after returning from the war, he began working at Lederle Laboratories. There he met Margaret Pasinosky, who was working at the time in the infirmary as a nurse. They were married in 1946. Mr. Guterl spent the rest of his working life at Lederle. He went to school at night for many years on the G.I. Bill, earning his Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering from New York University. At Lederle, he rose through the ranks to become head of chemical production, and he served for a spell as acting plant manager. He was known at Lederle as an exceptionally fair-minded and straight talking manager. One of his favorite catchphrases at the office was ?better days are coming.? At his retirement party in 1985 he pulled an oversized cigar from his jacket pocket and declared: ?And now they're here!? In retirement he indulged a passion for gardening and landscaping. For years his neighbors were treated each summer to shopping bags full of tomatoes, cucumbers and string beans the overflow from his vegetable garden. Mr. Guterl lost his oldest son, Richard, in September 1998 and his wife, Margaret in March 2002. He is survived by three sisters, and one brother. He also leaves behind his son, Fred, his daughter-in-law, Jude and grandkids; Sophie and Benjamin. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday at 12:30 pm at Higgin's Funeral Home in New City; burial to follow at Brick Church Cemetery in Monsey. In lieu of flowers, mourners are requested to make a donation to Vietnam Vets of America #333, P.O. Box 243, New City, NY 10956. MICHAEL J. HIGGINS FUNERAL HOME, INC. 321 S.
