Eureka: Alice Kurle, 82, of Eureka died Friday, May 27, 2011, at the Eureka Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, June 6, 2011, at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Eureka, with Pastor Dianne Rood-Kiesz leading the service. Organist will be Willis Kiesz and soloist will be Ronda Lapp. Ushers will be Calvin Neuharth and Earl Gruebele.
Visitation will be at Lien-Straub Funeral Chapel from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday. Family will be present from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Visitation resumes at the church 1 p.m. Monday.
Alice Doerr, daughter of Katherina (Burrer) and Jacob Doerr, was born 15 miles northeast of Eureka on June 21, 1928. This is the area where she grew up and attended school. Alice remained on the family farm for a few years, and helped her parents as well as neighbors.
Alice married Harvey Kurle at the Hoffnungsfeld Congregational Church northeast of Eureka on Feb. 2, 1947. The newlyweds first settled on Harvey's home place three miles northeast of Eureka. In 1954, they moved into Eureka where they made their home. Alice was employed at various jobs in town until her retirement in 1990. For the past 18 months, she resided at the Avera Eureka Healthcare Center.
Alice was an active member of the United Church of Christ and served in various offices in the UCC Ladies Aide and the Eureka American Legion Auxiliary. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed sewing, needlework and going on numerous travels with Harvey and other friends and relatives. Alice was skilled at hosting huge holiday meals and took pleasure in organizing large family rummage sales each summer.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband of 64 years, Harvey; her two daughters: Nancy (Richard) Curran of Veblen and Debbie (Charlie) Erickson of Bismarck, N.D.; four sisters: Irene Schlekau of Nipoma, Calif., Frances (Floyd) Kallenberger of Huron, Bernice (Ulane) Franklund of Wilton, N.D., and Delores Thurn of Wishek, N.D.; six grandchildren: Tammy (William) Gallagher of St. Michael, Minn., Jill (Leif) Brenne of Snoqualmie, Wash., Gina Dais of Mountlake Terrace, Wash., Amy (Daniel) Piotter of New Effington, S.D., Jordan Erickson of Mooresville, N.C., and Mitch Erickson of Bismarck; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother on May 2, 1980; her father on April 18, 1957; her daughter, Karen Dais; two brothers, Oscar and Willie; and two sisters, Loretta Bender and Esther at age four.
Casketbearers will be Tim Schmidt of Herreid, Ken Kurle, Mark Gruebele, Les Schock, Gary Oster and Keith Kunz, all of Eureka.
Burial will be at the Eureka Cemetery.
Lien-Straub Funeral Chapel, Eureka, is in charge of arrangements.
