Elvin was born to Fred and Marie (Koerner) Guthmiller on their family farm on October 28, 1927. He attended grade school at Halsey School, Vernon Township in Beadle County. In 1945 he graduated from Virgil High School. In 1950 he was inducted into the Army and served with the Signal Corps in Korea from 1951 to 1952.
Elvin and Bonnie Hayes were united in marriage on June 22, 1952 in Alpena. They farmed on the Guthmiller family farm from 1952 to 1993 when they retired to Huron, SD. They celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in June of 2013 with their immediate family.

Over the years he painted, repaired, and contributed to his church in any way he could.
