Delores D. Guthmiller, age 86, of Huron, died Friday, October 8, 2010 at StoneyBrook Suites in Huron. Her funeral service was Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at American Lutheran Church in Huron with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Delores Dorothea Guthmiller was born March 14, 1924, to Helmuth and Bertha (Lucas) Mees at Alpena, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed in the Congregational Church of Alpena.
Delores attended and graduated from Lane School in 1942. She then attended Wessington Springs Junior College and Huron College before teaching at Halsey School. When she first started teaching at Halsey School (a rural school in Vernon Township), she boarded at the Fred and Marie Guthmiller home where she met her future husband, Arnold.
Delores married Arnold Guthmiller on September 30, 1945 at the Congregational Church of Alpena. To this union, three children were born: Sandra, Dale, and Colleen. They lived on a farm in rural Vernon Township until moving in to Huron in 1994.
In addition to teaching at Halsey School, Delores taught at Bonilla School and St. John?s Lutheran Parochial School in Wolsey. She also worked at Lewis Drug in Huron for 14 years. She taught Sunday school, was an active church member at St. John?s Lutheran Church in Wolsey and later at the American Lutheran Church in Huron, belonged to an extension club, and the Farm Bureau Organization, receiving the recognition of the Beadle County Farm Bureau Woman of the Year in 1974.
In her later years she was a member of the RSVP. She faithfully went to spend time and assist in caring for Arnold at the Huron Nursing Home where she also enjoyed visiting with the residents. Her hobbies included gardening, reading, sewing, and listening to music, especially music played by her children and grandchildren.
Delores is survived by two daughters, Sandra (Dennis) Johnson of Parker, and Colleen Johnson of Sioux Falls; one son, Dale (Candy) Guthmiller of Wolsey; six granddaughters, Kerri (Ryan) Cox of Sioux Falls, Kaylyn (Gerad) Robertson of Parker, Chastity (Brian) Beyer of Houston, TX, Brooke (John) Sydow of Brookings, Hannah Johnson of Hill City, and Carrie Johnson, of Sioux Falls; one grandson, Kent (Jesse) Johnson of Brookings; ten great-grandchildren; brothers, Duane (Barbara) Mees of Waterford, CT, Neil (Jeanette) Mees of Huron, brothers-in-law, Laurel Liedtke of Huron, Elvin (Bonnie) Guthmiller of Huron; sister-in-law, Darlene (Gerald) Boe of Wolsey; and several nieces and nephews.
Delores was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Carol Liedtke; and her husband, Arnold in 1997.

Her funeral service will be 10:30 am Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at American Lutheran Church in Huron with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1-8 pm Tuesday, October 12, at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 5-7 pm; or one hour prior to service at the church.
